360° virtual tour of the submarine Proteus S-113, Hellenic Navy

Fifty years of service and roughly 260,000 nautical miles beneath the surface. The Hellenic Navy submarine Proteus (S-113) is now the first museum submarine in Greece.

Ordered in 1967 from the HDW shipyard in Kiel, launched in February 1972, she reached Greece in March 1973. In July 1974 she carried out three war patrols during the Cyprus operations. After modernisation at the Salamis Naval Base she remained in active service until May 2022. In February 2025 she was towed to Flisvos, and on 11 May 2026 she was formally handed over as a museum ship, alongside the armoured cruiser Georgios Averof in the Odysseas naval heritage park now taking shape at Palaio Faliro.

The name carries weight. The previous Proteus, built in France and commissioned in 1929, was lost in the Ionian Sea on 29 December 1940 with her entire crew of 48, after sinking the Italian transport Sardegna. The submarine you can now walk through closes a circle opened by a boat that never came home.

What the tour shows:
  • 27 panoramas across 7 compartments, from the torpedo room to the engine room
  • The control centre with the forward periscope, the course plotter and the diving planes
  • The crew quarters, the galley and the commanding officer's cabin
  • Labelled hotspots on individual instruments, video, and an ambient soundscape of engines and sonar
The virtual tour is a production of the Hellenic Institute for Maritime History (ELINIS), with technical implementation by 360photographers, for the Floating Naval Museum Georgios Averof. More on the vessel's history at navalhistory.gr.
